Question
Hi everyone,I am having trouble understanding this explanation at ALL. :( Cramster tries their very best, but I am just not physics-inclined.
The book is Principles of Physics (Ch1, 7P).

Which of the following equations are dimensionally correct?
(a) Vf = Vi + ax (b) y = (2m)cos(kx), where k = 2m-1. Thanks in advance, I am just hopelessly confused about the explanation. (a) Vf = Vi + ax (b) y = (2m)cos(kx), where k = 2m-1. Thanks in advance, I am just hopelessly confused about the explanation.
Explanation / Answer
a) dimension of Vf and Vi is same i.e. L/T. dimension of ax = LT^-2 * L = L^2T^-2 since all the terms are not of same dimensions. the equation is dimensionally incorrect b)dimension of y is L. dimension of RHS here is L too (cos(kx) is a dimensionless quantity so the only dimension comes from 2m term.) so, the given equation is dimensionally correct.
