Discussion Questions:
Part 1: Discussion Points
Operation Migration is a conservation project designed to restore natural populations of whooping cranes in North America. Discuss the following points in small groups:
- List some of the practical points that project designers would have to consider when planning the journey with the cranes between the summer and winter habitat.
- Name the types of learning used in this project and explain how they are used to aid in population recovery.
- What aspects of the project design ensure that whooping cranes will not become dependent on human interaction?
Part 2:
Given the scale of the Operation Migration project it is clear that a lot of time, effort and funding is being invested into re-establishing the whooping crane population. Do you think that this type of species recovery project is a valuable use of these resources? Clearly explain your point of view.
Explanation / Answer
- Funding, maintenance of the aircrafts, weather over the 1200 miles - Imprinting by the birds -No human contact "natural as nature itself" Part 2 It would take several decades to gain a sizable population. Given the extreme genetic bottleneck and lack of diversity in the population, its entirely possible the species still dies out. The bird is probably not that vital in the grand scheme because only 15 birds is not causing any significant problems.
