Question

#9:
A(n) 5 g bullet is fired into a 115 g block that
is initially at rest at the edge of a frictionless
table of height 1.5 m. The bullet remains in
the block, and after impact the block lands
2.3 m from the bottom of the table. The height of the table is 1.5m.
The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s2 .

Find the initial speed of the bullet.
Answer in units of m/s.

Explanation / Answer

Given that      M = 115 g      m = 5 g      d = 2.3 m      h = 1.5 m From the conservation of energy we have          m v = (M+m)V ==> v = (M + m) V / m But V = d / t = d g/2h = gd2 /2h    ==> v = [(M + m) / m ] * [gd2 / 2h ] Substituting values we get             v = 99.76 m/s
