A speed breaker (mound) on a flat street has radius 8.2 m (a)Find the maximum speed of a 1200kg car, when its passing over it,without being airborne, (b) Find the force on the car from themound of its speed is 15 mile/hr. (c) What would be the force onthe car if the car stop on the mound?

Explanation / Answer

a) since weight of the car must be equal to the centripetalforce
mg = m Vmax2 / R or Vmax = sqrt(gR)
Vmax= sqrt( 9.8 x 8.2) Vmax= 9.0 m/s
b) N=mg - m V2/R = m( g - V2/R ) since: 1 mph equal to 0.44704 meters per second(m/s)
N= 1200( 9.8 - (6.71)2 / 8.2) N= 5170 N - c) N = mg N= 1200 x 9.8 = N= 11760N
