Question
Two students are on a balcony a distance h above the street. One student throws a ball vertically downward at a speed v1; at the same time, the other student throws a ball vertically upward at the same speed. Answer the following symbolically in terms of v1, g, h, and t. (a)What is the time interval between when the first ball strikes the ground and the second ball strikes the ground? (b)Find the velocity of each ball as it strikes the ground. (c)How far apart are the balls at a time t after they are thrown and before they strike the ground?Explanation / Answer
The time interval will be equal to the time the 1st ball takes togo up and again come down to the original height of the roof. Let that time be t. At the top, v=0. So, v=u- gt 0 = v1-gt =>t=v1/g Now, time taken to go up =time taken to come down.. So. total time diff =2t =2v1/g
