Question

A scaffold 100 m long with a mass of 100 kg is suspended by asingle wire located 35 meters from the left end. Three men arestanding on the scaffold in such a way that it remains level. Oneman with a mass of 50 kg is standing 60 meters from the left end;another with a mass of 75 kg is standing on the left edge. If thethird man has a mass of 40 kg, where is he standing? Also, dream up an example of two torques acting on the samebody, one clockwise and the other counterclockwise with differentangles, where the two forces are not equal to each other. Make adiagram and choose numerical values for the forces, distance, andangles in a correct way. Explanation / Answer

AS THE scaffold is in requilibrium the net torque of theforces should be 0 about any point lets do it about the point ofsusprension as we do not know the tensthe clockwise torques about thispoint is due to weight ,and due to a mass of 50kg=100*9.8*15+50*9.8*25 let us assume tghe torque is anti clock wise due to 40kg and 75kg that is 40*9.8*(35-d)+75*9.8*35 equating these two we get value of d if it were + then 40 kgs is to the left and if- then itshould be right of point of suspension
