Question
Three uniform meter sticks, each of mass m,are placed on the floor as follows: stick 1 lies along they axis from y = 0.310 m to y = 1.31 m,stick 2 lies along the x axis from x = 0.200 m tox = 1.20 m, stick 3 lies along the x axis fromx = 1.45 m to x = 2.45 m. Calculate the locationof the center of mass of the meter sticks. Enter a singlex value first and then the y value. Meaningthere is only one answer for the center of mass for the metersticks on the x-axis.Not sure where to start and havent seen a question like itbefore!
Explanation / Answer
Center of mass position X = (m X1 + mX2 ) / 2m = (X1 + X2) / 2 = (0.200 +1.20) / 2 = 0.7 m Y = (mY1 + mY2 ) / 2m = (Y1 + Y2) / 2 = (0.310 +1.31) / 2 = 0.81 m (X, Y) = (0.7m , 0.81m) Similarly X = (m X1 + mX2 ) / 2m = (X1 + X2) / 2 = (1.45 + 2.45)/ 2 = 1.95 m Y = (mY1 + mY2 ) / 2m = (Y1 + Y2) / 2 = (0.310 +1.31) / 2 = 0.81 m (X, Y) = (1.95m , 0.81m)
