Question

For this assignment you are going to take the role of being a preschool director. You have been informed by a parent that their child, who was at school the prior day, has been diagnosed with a communicable disease. You will need to write a letter to the parents and explain:

what disease has been reported

what signs and symptoms they should look for

what should they do if those symptoms appear in their child

what steps the center is taking

how long a diagnosed child must be excluded

Please make sure that your spelling and grammar are corrected before you submit your letter to me. You will submit it on-line.

A very useful website is the UCSF site: www.ucsfchildcarehealth.org referred to in the on-line lecture for chapter 6.

Explanation / Answer

Dear Parent or Guardian:

This is to inform you that a student in your child’s classroom has been diagnosed with Chicken Pox; therefore your child may have been exposed to this disease.

what signs and symptoms they should look for

The signs and symptoms are as follows:

Chicken pox is one of the most highly contagious childhood diseases. Early signs and symptoms include sudden onset of slight fever, a vague feeling of body weakness or discomfort (malaise) and loss of appetite. Within 24 hours an itchy rash begins on the back and chest, then spreads to the face and other areas. This progresses to a red elevated pimple-like rash that breaks, drains and forms scabs for 3 to 4 days. The skin rash goes through typical stages: flat red spots, raised spots, small blisters and crusting blisters. Lesions commonly occur in successive crops, with several stages of maturity present at the same time. They tend to be more abundant on covered rather than on exposed parts of the body. They may appear on the scalp, high in the armpit or on mucous membranes of the mouth, upper respiratory track and on the lining of the eyelids.

what should they do if those symptoms appear in their child

If your child has any of these symptoms, we recommend that you to consult your family health care provider

what steps the center is taking

Any student presenting these signs and symptoms will be excluded from school.

how long a diagnosed child must be excluded

Students may return to school when all scabs are dry. Students must have a note from a health care provider stating they are non-communicable in order to return to school.
