This is a gordon rule question Q#1 A solid cylinder and a hollow cynder roll from rest downan incline plane. If both cylinder have the same mass and externalradius, which cylinder reaches the bottom first? . which has thegreater momentum of inertia? and why? This is a gordon rule question Q#1 A solid cylinder and a hollow cynder roll from rest downan incline plane. If both cylinder have the same mass and externalradius, which cylinder reaches the bottom first? . which has thegreater momentum of inertia? and why?Explanation / Answer
Moment of inertia of soild cylinder I = ( 1/ 2) mr ^ 2
Moment of inertia of hallow cylinder I ‘ = mr ^ 2
Both have same mass and radius.
So, Moment of inertia of hallow cylinder is greater moment ofinertia than solid cylinder.
(b). from law of conservation of angular momentum , Iw =constant
From this angular speed is inversely proportional to its momentof inertia.
So, soild cylinder reaches the bottom first.
