Question
X-rays with wavelength of0,71Å ejectphotoelectrons from a gold foil. The electrons form a circular path ofradius r in a region where constant magnetic field B ispresent.
Experiment shows that rB=1.88x10-4 Tesla-m. Find themaximum kinetic energy of the photoelectrons.

Explanation / Answer
If the electron is going in circles then a= v2/R and in a magnetic field the force is F = qvB F = ma = mv2/R so qvB = mv2/R or RB = mv/q The kinetic energy is T = (1/2)mv2 the mass and charge of the electron are m = 9.10x1031 Kgq =1.602x1019 C then v = 33.096x106 ms-1and T = 4.989x10-16 J T = 3.114 keV For comparison, the energy of the incoming photon is 17.5 keV ascalculated by the poster above.
