Question

Hi all! My prof assigned a problem for extra credit but I can'tseem to figure this one out.
I was to take two mirrors and at 8 different angles betweenthem note the number of reflections there were in them.
These are my points: Degrees # of reflections 20 14 40 8 50 6 60 6 70 4 80 4 90 4 120 2
Now i need to derive a formula relating the two (number ofreflections and angle). I know of snells law, but i can't seem toget anything to relate them. Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Explanation / Answer

When two plane mirrors are kept facing each other at an angle and an object is placed between them, multiple images of theobject are formed as a result of multiple successivereflections. If (360/) is even, then the number of images is givenby n = (360/) - 1 If (360/) is odd, then the following two situationsarise (i)if the object lies symmetrically, then n = (360/) - 1 (ii)if the object lies unsymmetrically, then n = (360/) When the two plane mirrors are placed parallel to eachother, then n = (360/zero) = (infinite number of images)
