Question

      So this is a problem givento me by my professor and I don't know where to start or what todo, so if someone could help me I would greatly appreciate it.Thanks Ginger decided to set up a Cartesian coordinate system withthe +X axis the right, the +Y axis up, and the +Z axis out of thepaper. She added a magnetic field of intensity = +K 0.250Tesla which filled a strip in the XY plane 1 meter wide with theleft edge coniciding with the Y axis. The she shot 25 MEV protonsalong the +X axis. When they entereed the magnetic field theyexperienced a magnetic field with their velocity vector making anangle with respect to the + X axis. Do the protons defectupwards____ or downwards_____? Calculate the magnitude of .Calculate the Y component of momentum of the protons as they emergefrom the magnetic field. Sin = ________________ Py = ___________________

Explanation / Answer

Given that     B = 0.25T k     V = 25MeV     m = mass of proton = 1.67 x 10-27kg     d = 1 m We know that                    V = Ed     ==> E = V / d                 = 25 x 106 eV / 1 m = 25 x 106 N / C We also know that the relation             v = E / B       ( here taken =90o so that particles are moving upward)                = 25 x 106 / 0.25                = 1 x 108 m/s The y - component of the momentum          P = mv = 1.67 x10-27 * 1 x 108 = 1.67 x10-19 kg-m/s
