Question

4)A square loop of wire lies in the plane of the page. A decreasingmagnetic field is directed into the page. The induced current inthe loop is:
a. counterclockwise
b. clockwise
c. zero
d. depends upon whether or not B is decreasing at a constantrate
e. clockwise in two of the loop sides and counterclockwise in theother two

5) A vertical bar magnet is moved at constant velocity through thecenter of a horizontal loop of wire, with its north pole leading. At the instant when the midpoint of the magnet is in the plane ofthe loop, the induced current in the loop, viewed from above,is:
a. maximum and clockwise
b. maximum and counterclockwise
c. not maximum but clockwise
d. not maximum but counterclockwise
e. essentially zero

Explanation / Answer

4) The induced current must result in a magnetic field that willoppose the change in the magnetic field that's already set up. Theoriginal magnetic field is decreasing into the page, so themagnetic field of the induced current will have toadd to it, and so will also go into the page. I thinkthat's Lenz's law, so you could always look in your book to checkthat out. Right hand rule will give the induced current goingclockwise: point your thumb in the direction of the magnetic field(into the page) and your fingers will curl in the direction of thecurrent.
