Question
A baseball is hit so that it travels straight upward after beingstruck by the bat. A fan observes that it takes 3.00s for the ballto reach its maximum height. Find (a) the ball's initial velocityand (b) the height it reaches.I am not looking for the answers, I'm asking what formula touse!
The solution manual and few others has given me the formula
Vf = Vi - axt
Vi = axt
Vi = gxt
I understand that -Vi = -axt >>>> Vi = axt, but whathappened to Vf? The question did not give us the velocity so howdid we know Vf is zero?
Explanation / Answer
when the ball reach the maximum height=> thevelocity of the ball must be zero.(because if the velocityis not equal to zero,assume its velocity is upward=> it canreach the larger height, if its velocity is downward=> itreached the maximum height before that time) so we have: at the maximum height :V=Vo-gt =0 => Vo=gt =9.8*3=29.4 m/s the height : H= Vo.t -(1/2).gt^2 = 29.4*3 -(1/2)*9.8*3^2 =44.1m
