Question

1) A jewel thief steals an Easter Egg made of gold withornate design in diamonds, emeralds and rubies, from an exhibit onthe third floor of a multistory building. Alarm is set off anda guard chases the thief to an upper floor. Seeing the guard, the thief drops the Egg from the window. A physics professor, seeing the Egg passing her window on the third floor, times itsmotion for the lower half of her window and records it to be0.101s. She then measures the distance the Egg moved to be1.5m.The floors of the building are 4m apart. The bottom ofthe professor’s window is 8m above the ground.

Explanation / Answer

first find out the speed at which the egg was moving when she firstobserved the egg. d=vo*t+1/2*a*t21.5m=vo*0.1s+1/2*-9.8m/s2*(0.1)2,vo=15.49m/s now find the distance travelled to get a speed of 15.49m/s v22=v12+2ad 15.492=02+2*9.8*d d=12.24m so the egg was dropped 12.24m above where the prof first observedit 12.24m + 1.5m + 8m=21.74 m 21.74m/4m/floor = 5.435, therefore the egg must have beendropped form the 6th floor
