Question

Write about the nitrogen cycle and how N moves between these pools. Note that there are many ways to define pools and fluxes in nutrient cycles, so you may find other N cycle examples that do not have the same pools as above. Write about the bacteria involved in transforming N between its different forms in the environment (N_2, NO_3^-, NO_2^-, N_2O, NH_3, NH_4^+): Pseudomonas, . Explain how each group of bacteria transforms nitrogen (e.g. those that do nitrogen fixation, nitrification, Be sure to include in your description which bacteria are in each group, and what forms N is transformed between in each process (e.g. N_2 to NH_4^+). Describe how lightening and fire transform the form (s) of atmospheric nitrogen.

Explanation / Answer

1. Nitrogen is present in all lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere.

Nitrogen moves between these pools thorough the following eight steps. These are :

A. Nitrogen in taken from the atmosphere by the process of nitrogen fixation which is a symbiotic process.

B. Ammonium and Nitrates are taken from the soil and water.

C. Ammonification i.e., concersion of organic nitrogen to ammonia.

D. Nitrification that is bacteria converts ammonia to Nitrates or nitrites.

E. Denitrification that is nitrate is converted back to the organic nitrogen.

F. Nitrate immobilization in which inorganic compounds are converted to organic compounds by the bacteria.

G. Leaching of nitrate from the soil.

H. Release of nitrogen, ammonia and nitrous oxide back to the atmosphere.

Thus nitrogen tends to move between all the pools in various forms.
