Question

Hi! The question is: To eight significan figure, Avogadro'sconstant is 6.0221367x10^23 mol^-1.
Which of the following choices demonstrates correct rounding?

-6.022x10^23 mol^-1
-6.0 c 10^23 mol^-1
-6.02214 x 10^23 mol^-1

The ones that seem most adequate are the first and the secondchoices, but the program says it is wrong. It is a masteringphysics question and now I have 2 attempts remaining but I amconfused!!! The question doesn't even says up to how many digits!=O

Any help appreciated! Thanks =]

Explanation / Answer

If you didn't make any then you are actually allowed to useall eight significant figures.
BTW, if these three are the only possibilities and the firsttwo are wrong, then the third one must be right, doesn't it.
It is better to post all the calculations you had to make, only then other people can say how many significant figures you canuse.
Some general rules concerning significant figures:
for adding and substracting you look at the amound ofdecimals. The answer get as many decimals as the number with thelowest amount of decimals in the sum.
so 5.4+3=8 and: 5.43+3.2=8.6
For multiplying you look at the total amount of significantfigures. The answer get as many figures as the number with thelowest amount of significant figures in the multiplication.
so:
5.43*3.6=20 4*260.3=1*103.
This last rule doesn't apply when one of the numbers isexact
so, if 4 is exact than
4*260.3=1041
