Question

1) Mini Real Science
This will be easier to understand and answer if you try this out.

Take two shot glasses— Fill one to the rim with water and place it on a cloth or towel on a table. Fill the second shot glass with a colorful liquor (or rubbing alcohol if you are not of legal drinking age, since no college student under the legal age would be expected to have access to liquor or shot glasses). Cover the shot glass with your alcohol with a plastic card like a credit card, then flip it. Stack this shot glass directly below the shot glass of water so if it wasn’t for the plastic card, the two rims would touch. Slide the plastic card slightly until the two liquids can come in contact with each other. Watch for 5 minutes to see if there is any change or reaction What will happen when you do this? Why did this happen?

2) Mini Real Science Part 2

Take two straws and a glass or water or other beverage. Put one straw in the drink, and the second straw in your mouth. Bend down so the straw in your mouth is on the outside of the glass, and the straw in the drink is also in your mouth. Try and use the straws to drink the drink. Is it easier or harder to drink this way? Why?

Explanation / Answer

1)

What will happen when you do this?

The color liquor rises up into the water.

Why did this happen?

The density of the alcohol is smaller than water.

2)

Harder.

You’ll observe that no matter how hard you try to suck up the drink, all you’ll get in your mouth will be air, only air. This happens because air is lighter than liquids and so, it is much easier to suck up air through the second straw than to suck up your drink through the first one.
