Question

7.

A 1.9 kg ball is attached to a ceiling by a string. The distance from the ceiling to the center of the ball is 0.85 m, and the height of the room is 3.00 m.

(a) What is the gravitational potential energy associated with the ball relative to the ceiling?
Answer in Joules
(b) What is the gravitational potential energy associated with the ball relative to the floor?
Answer in Joules
(c) What is the gravitational potential energy associated with the ball relative to a point at the same elevation as the ball?
Answer in Joules

Explanation / Answer

a) Relative to the ceiling the ball is 0.85 m below, relative to the ceiling the Potential energy is PEc = -1.9x9.8x0.85

So PEc = -15.827 Joules

b) Relative to the floor ball is h = (3 - 0.85) = 2.15 m above it,relative to floor potential energy is PEf = 1.9x9.8x2.15

So PEf = 40.033 Joules

c) Relative to a point that is on the same level as the ball it's Potential energy is Zero joules
