Question
CE Predict/Explain 21.86 Part A When the switch is closed in the circuit shown in the figure(Figure 1), does the total power dissipated in the circuit increase, decrease, or stay the same? increase decrease stay the same Submit My Answers Give Up Part B Choose the best explanation from among the following: The power dissipated remains the same because power, P = IV. is independent of resistance The equivalent resistance of the circuit is reduced by closing the switch, but the voltage remains the same. Therefore, from P = V2 /R we see that the power dissipated increases. Closing the switch adds one more resistor to the circuit. This makes it harder for the battery to supply current, which decreases the power dissipated. Figure 1 of 1 Submit My Answers Give Up ContinueExplanation / Answer
A) When switch is closed power starts dissipating in 3rd bulb also. So overall power dissipation in circuit INCREASES.
Since all bulbs are in parallel so all are independently connected to battery and draw current from battery.
B) The equivalent resistance of the circuit is reduced but voltage remains same. So by P = V2/R we see power increases.
