Question

What is an enzyme? Describe the active site of an enzyme. Tell what energy of activation is. Write the equation for a reaction between an enzyme and substrate to form a product. The equation should show how both the enzyme/substrate complex and product are formed. Compare and contrast reversible and irreversible inhibition. Name and explain how at least three factors can influence the speed of enzymatic reactions. Compare and contrast competitive and noncompetitive inhibition. Describe how oxidation and reduction occurs in cells. Describe the electron transport chain. What is ATP? Why is it called the energy currency in cells? What is a coupling reaction?

Explanation / Answer

Enzymes are the macromolecules which are biological catalysts. They catalyse or accelerate several metabolic reactions in our body. Most of the enzymes are proteins but few are RNA molecules also. They increase the rate of reaction by lowering its activation energy.

Their activity can be affected by other molecules such as inhibitors, that decrease their activity and activators , that increase their activity.
