PLEASE ANSWER ALL PARTS

1. Laika was the first being to ever orbit the Earth, accomplishing this feat in 1957. Laika was also a stray dog found on the cold, hard streets of Moscow before being enlisted in the Soviet space program Today, sixty years after her historic journey, I am going to launch one of her descendants, Laika XX, into space. Don't worry, Laika XX volunteered herself and received ample training for her mission She'll be safe. Before launch, while still back on Earth, we measured the length of Laika XX to be 1.5 m from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail. Some time after launch, her rocket reaches its final (constant) speed of 0.75 c and continues to cruise at this speed as it heads toward the stars.

Explanation / Answer

a) Apparent length of Laika as observed by an oserver on earth, L = (1- v2/c2)1/2 * Lo

                                                                                              = (1-0.752)1/2* 1.5

                                                                                              = 0.66 m

b) L = Lo , when v = 0. The frame which follws the Laika herself, measures the proper length of Laika.

c) Speed of Laika relative to earth, v = 0.75c+0.5c = 1.25 c !!

As maximum observed speed can not exceed speed of light so the observed speed is c.

d) Here v = 0.75c, so L = (1- v2/c2)1/2 * Lo

                                   = (1-0.752)1/2* 1.5

                                   = 0.66 m
