Production of hyderogen peroxide with bypassing the electron carriers in electron transport chain in mitochondria is an observed in certain organisms. Such electron bypassing mechanisms provide a great deal of defence mechanism to several organisms, such as plants. Cyanide toxicity is prevented by bypassing electrons from ubiquinone to oxygen by an integral membrane enzyme called alternative oxidase. This is the reason why plants are not killed by cyanide, unlike animals.
