Question
I have attached the answers for the first 4 questions, so please answer the the questions from 5 to 9Experiment 1 Measurement and Error PHY 2091 Post-Lab Worksheet Name: Date:- Section # Answer the next four questions by selecting one of the following responses. a) Random intrinsic error in the temperature b) Systematic intrinsic error in the temperature c) Random error in measurement d) Systematic error in measurement e) Not applicable (explain why) l) Suppose a student measures the water temperature in a lake for five consecutive days The student uses three, glass thermometer and consistently measures the temperature at the same time of day and from the end of the same fishing pier. On the first four days he lowers his thermometers 2 feet into the water. On the next day he gets careless and lowers them to a depth of 1 foot where the water is warmer. What type of error is this? 2) On any given day, all three measurements differ from one another by a few fractions of one degree Celsius. What type of error is this? 3) Suppose this student obtains an electronic temperature sensor and uses it on the fifth day in addition to the three glass thermometers. The sensor gives a reading that is 2.8 degrees warmer than the average of the other measurements. What type of error is this? days. However, a tropical storm moves into the area and delivers 12 inches of rain during two of the five days. The average temperature of the lake is therefore abnormally cooler on these days. What type of error is this? 4) Two weeks later, the student returns to the lake and makes another set of readings for five 1.19
Explanation / Answer
1. in this case the error is due to negligence of the observer. This is a case of random error in measurement
2. on any given day all measurements differ from each other by a fraction of degree, this is because of intrinsic temperature nature, that it keeps on fluctuating due to numerous factors
So this is Random intrinsic error in the temperature
3. When a new thermometer is used, it gives a different reading than any otehr day, this is because of using a differnet instrument, which might be due to calliberation issues. This is systematic error in observation
4. when there is abnormally cooler temperature, its because of drastic change in external factors, this is an error based on the fact that external conditions were not the same while performing the experiment, and hence this migh as well be called as am entirely different measurement for a different sort of experimental result. this tyoe of error is not included in any of the options mentioned above
