questions:

3a. Why is a better result obtained when you use a very large net force?

b. In the calculation of the acceleration, we have assumed that the pulley is frictionless. Can you find a simple way in the experiment to test whether this is true? If so, how to correct for it?

thanks

Explanation / Answer

3a. Better results are obtained when a large force is used because of the fact that pulley has a constant friction ( near constant). With large force, this constant becomes fractionally small, and hence reducing tghe error in the experimental results. Hence using a large force improves experimental results

b. In calculating the acceleration we have assumed the pulley to be frictionless

To check this, a simple way would be to wind a mass on the pulley with a cord and allow it tro fall and measure its free fall time and distance, this gives us acceler5ation of falling body, which when less than the expected value 'g' is due to pulley friciton, This friction can be greatly reduced though , by adding lubricants to the pulley to reduce its friction
