Question

Part C

How far did you travel while braking?

Driving home from school one day, you spot a ball rolling out into the street (see the figure (Figure 1)). You brake for 1.20 s, slowing your 980-kg car from 16.0 m/s to 9.50 m/s. You may want to review. What was the magnitude of the average force exerted on your car during braking? Express your answer using two significant figures. What was the direction of the average force exerted on your car during braking? To the direction of motion. Opposite to the direction of motion.

Explanation / Answer

a)

Vf = final velocity = 9.50 m/s

Vi = initial velocity = 16 m/s

t = time = 1.20 s

acceleration is given as

a = (Vf - Vi)/t = (9.50 - 16)/1.20 = - 5.42 m/s2

force is given as

F = ma = 980 x 5.42 = 5311.6 N
