Question

A bicyclist makes a trip that consists of three parts, each in the same direction (due north) along a straight road. During the second part, she rides for 29.9 minutes at an average speed of 8.73 m/s. During the second part, she rides for 37.6 minutes at an average speed of 4.68 m/s. Finally, during the third part, she rides for 11.6 minutes at an average speed of 16.5 m/s. (a) How far has the bicyclist traveled during the entire trip? (b) What is the average speed of the bicyclist for the trip? (a) Number 37703.7 Units m (b) Number 7.72 Units m/s

Explanation / Answer

(a) Distance covered in first part (d1) = velocity*time = 8.73*(29.9*60) = 15661.62 m
Distance covered in second part (d2) = velocity*time = 4.68*(37.6*60) = 10558.08 m
Distance covered in thid part (d3) = velocity*time = 16.5*(11.6*60) = 11484 m
hence the total distance covered = d1 + d2 + d3 = 37703.7 m
(b) Now for average velocity = total distance /total time
hence total time for the three parts = 29.9 + 37.6+11.6 = 79.1 minutes = 79.1*60 = 4746 s
Hence average velocity = 37703.7 / 4746 = 7.944 m/s
