Question

You are given a square metal piece and a ruler as part of a measurement activity in the studio lab The uncertainty in the reading of the ruler is = The reading of the ruler on the left edge A of the square metal piece is: The reading of the ruler on the right edge B of the square metal piece is: Calculate the length L of the square metal piece. Show your working below. Report your reading for the length L of the metal piece in the standard four part format. Calculate the area of the metal piece.

Explanation / Answer

The ruler is graded in cms, the nimum reading is 1 mm

thus the measurment of any length or position can be to an acuuracy of +/- 0.5 mm

uncertianity of the ruler is +/- 0.5 mm

reading at the left edge A = 12.9 +/- 0.05 cm

reading at the right edge 18 +/- 0.05 cm

Length of the square L = ( 18+/-0.05 ) - (12.9 +/- 0.05) = 5.1 +/-0.1 cm

Area of the square = (5.1 +/-0.1)2 sq.cm

while multiply the percentage uncertianity add up

percentage uncertainity in L = 0.1/5.1 *100 = 1.96%

uncertianity in area = 2*1.96 = 3.92 %

Area = 26.01 +/- 1.02 sq.cm
