Question
Ketosis is a metabolic state in which some of the body's energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis in which blood glucose provides most of the energy. It is a medical condition which commonly happens in diabetic patients and individuals under fasting or low-carbohydrate diet. (In severe circumstances, ketosis is accompanied by ketoacidosis, lowering of the blood pH caused by accumulation of acetoacetate and ß- hydroxybutyrate.) Explain the process of increased blood ketone body levels induced during lowcarb diet and how similar process happens in diabetic patients which can lead to their breath smelling like acetone (or nail polish remover).
Explanation / Answer
In case of low carbohydrates diet or fasting situations, the glucose is being first used up the body..!! After the glucose levels goes down in the body the body starts utilizing the stored fats in our body..!! As the beta oxidation of fats takes place it produces huge amounts of acetyl - CoA in the body which gets converted to ketone bodies which provide the energy to the brain also..!!!
In case of diabetes, the person has very high levels of glucose which results in the formation of the high level of pyurvate molecules which gets converted to acetyl - CoA which in turns due to the high energy can't go to the Kreb cycle but gets converted to the ketone bodies..!! Hence more ketone are present..!!
