Question
Henrietta is going off to her physics class, jogging down the sidewalk at a speed of 2.70 m/s. Her husband Bruce suddenly realizes that she left in such a hurry that she forgot her lunch of bagels, so he runs to the window of their apartment, which is a height 45.4 m above the street level and directly above the sidewalk, to throw them to her. Bruce throws them horizontally at a time 7.50 s after Henrietta has passed below the window, and she catches them on the run. You can ignore air resistance. With what initial speed must Bruce throw the bagels so Henrietta can catch them just before they hit the ground? Express your answer using three significant figures. Where is Henrietta when she catches the bagels? Express your answer using three significant figures.Explanation / Answer
Here ,
part A) let the initial speed of the bagets is u
speed of Henrietta , v = 2.70 m/s
h = 45.4 m
as bagets is thrown horizontally
time of flight , t = sqrt(2h/g)
t = sqrt(2* 45.4/9.8) = 3.04 s
Now, as there is a 7.5 s delay
speed of Bagets = distance/time of flight
speed of Bagets = (2.70 * 7.5 - 3.03 * 2.70)/3.03
speed of Bagets = 3.98 m/s
the speed of bagets is 3.98 m/s
b) for the Henrietta position
position of Henrietta = 2.70 * 7.5 - 3.03 * 2.70
position of Henrietta = 12.1 m
position of Henrietta from the window is 12.1 m
