Question

Tadeh launches a model rocket straight up from his backyard that takes 6.65 s to reach its maximum altitude. (After launch, the rocket's motion is only influenced by gravity. Enter magnitudes only.) (a) What is the rocket's Initial velocity? m/s (b) What is the maximum altitude reached by the rocket? m In a cartoon program, Peter tosses his baby, Stewie, up Into the air to keep the child entertained. Stewie reaches a maximum height of 0.856 m above the release point. Suppose the positive y axis points upward. (a) With what initial velocity was Stewie thrown? (Express your answer in vector form.) m/s (b) How much time did it take Stewie to reach the peak height?

Explanation / Answer

Given,

t = 6.65 s

a)At the maximum altitude ; v = 0.

from eqn of motion

v = u + at

0 = u - 9.8 t =>u = 9.8 x t

u = 9.8 x 6.65 = 65.17 m/s

Hence, u = 65.17 m/s

b)from another eqn we know that

v^2 = u^2 + 2 a S

0 = 65.17^2 - 2 x 9.8 x S => S = 65.17^2/2 x 9.8 = 216.7 m

Hence, S = 216.7 m
