Question
An automobile and a truck start from rest at the same instant, with the automobile initially at some distance behind the truck. The truck has a constant acceleration of 2.50 m/s2, and the automobile an acceleration of 3.60 m/s^2. The automobile overtakes the truck after the truck has moved 39.0 m. (a) How much time does it take the automobile to overtake the truck? (b) How far was the automobile behind the truck initially? (c) What is the speed of each when they are abreast? automobile: m/s truckL m/sExplanation / Answer
a) s = 1/2at^2
time taken by each vechile is same
39 = 1/2 (2.50) t^2
t = 5.585 sec apprx
b) s( total distance travlled by automobile) = 1/2 (3.60) (5.585 )^2=56.16 m
initially automobile was = 56.16 - 39=17.16 m
c)automobile = v = sqroot ( 2x 3.60 x 56.16) =20.108 m/s apprx
truck = sqroot ( 2 x 2.50 x 39)=13.96 m/s apprx
