Question

My topic for a 4 - 6 page essay (with calculations required) is how mud walls (similar to the Walls of Jericho from the biblical story) could be knocked down using only the force of acoustics/sound. It is for a calculus course but will require alot of physics. I understand I will be calculating the physical force sound waves apply to objects and how mcuh force is required to take down the wall, but I am stuck. How would I go about doing these things and what else should I include to make this essay good? Anything specifcally relating to accoustics (the walls were supposdley knocked down by horns)

I am going to ask this question a few times for suggestions please do not answer twice. I always rate GOOD answers

Explanation / Answer

Okay. Before I can tell you how we can knock down a wall using sound waves, it is of extreme importance to understand How sound waves are accomplishing this. First thing first - Sound waves require a medium to travel, they can't travel in vacuum. you must be wondering why ? It is just a wave. Right. It is just a wave but it takes birth only because of mechanical perturbations (disturbances) in a medium. These disturbances create vibrations between particles. Now, this vibration and interaction of particles will create regions of high pressure and low pressure which will be considered as a PRESSURE WAVE. Now we got the point that actually pressure wave is doing the job of knocking down a wall. Now to knock down a wall such as wall of jericho, single horn instrument in not enough. We need to use multiple horns and create a low wavelength wave.

As wavelength is inversely proportional to frequency, this low wavelength will give rise of high frequency with several regions of high pressure. However, as it will travel in a form of wave, it will have region of low pression also but atleast it will put some force on the wall. Most of the force will be exerted on the wall by the high pressure region. Keep on doing this with multiple horns and at different points on the wall, the wall will be down in no time.

Talking about How much force will be required. We know that

Pressure = Force / Area

This implies, Force = Pressure * Area

From sound waves, we can easily find the pressure with the help of some instrument and we can measure the area of wall or a specific part on the wall, In this manner we can calculate the force to knock down a wall. And YES, wall material will also have some resistance to the pressure appplied, so we need to overcome or exceed that resistance in order to knock down the wall.

What else to add in your essay - You can show how we can measure the pressure of a sound wave and how we can use sound waves from different sources as a physical force. For example - an extremely loud rock band will produce high pressure sound waves.
