Question

A magnetic field is directed out of the page. A loop of wire is located in the plane of the page. For each event, circle if the magnetic flux will increase or decrease. For each event, circle if the induced current will flow clockwise or counter clockwise. a) The loop is tilted at angle to the page Flux through the loop will: increase decrease Current will flow: clockwise counterclockwise b) The magnetic field is suddenly turned off Flux through the loop will: increase decrease Current will flow: clockwise counterclockwise A square loop of wire with side length 4 cm is in the plane of the page. At time t = 0, a 6 T magnetic field is out of the page. The field changes to 2 T directed out of the page in 0.20 s. a) What is the magnetic flux through the loop of wire at time t = 0? b) What is the magnetic flux through the loop of wire 0.20 s later? c) What is the emf induced in the loop of wire during this time? d) If the resistance of the loop is 0.05 ohm, what is the induced current in the wire? e) Does the induced current in the wire flow clockwise or counterclockwise?

Explanation / Answer

1.

a.

When the loop is tilted, effective area of loop inside the magnetic field decreases and hence magnetic flux decreases.

As magnetic flux decreases hence as per Lenz's law, induced current will tend to increase it. So magnetic field due to induced current must be out of the plane of paper. That means induced current must be counterclockwise.

b.

When the magnetic field is turned off, magnetic flux decreases.

As magnetic flux decreases hence as per Lenz's law, induced current will tend to increase it. So magnetic field due to induced current must be out of the plane of paper. That means induced current must be counterclockwise.
