Question

(a) Find the equivalent resistance between points a and b in the figure below (R = 14.0 Ohm). 17.67 Ohm (b) A potential difference 34.0 V is applied between points a and b. Calculate the current in each resistor. I (4.00 Ohm) = 1.92 A I(7.00 Ohm) = ______ Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 100%. A I(14.0 Ohm) = _______ Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Rework your solution from the beginning and check each step carefully. A I(9.00 Ohm) = ______ Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 100%. A

Explanation / Answer

here 7 ohm and 14 ohm resistance are in parallel

so equilent resistance

= ( 7 x 14 ) / (7+14)

= 4.666 ohm

now 4.666 ohm and 4 ohm and 9 ohm are in series

so total equilent resistance

= 4.666 + 4 + 9 = 17.666 ohm

and the voltage V = 34 volt

so the current through 17.666 ohm

I = V / R

= 34 / 17.666 = 1.9245 Amp

the current will same in series combination so

I4.666 = I4 = I9 = I17.666 = 1.9245 Amp Ans

so voltage across 4.666 ohm

V4.666 = I4.666 x 4.666

= 1.9245 x 4.666 = 8.979717 volt

the voltage will same in parallel

so V7 = V14 = V4.666 = 8.979717 volt

so the current acroos 7 ohm

I7 = V7 / 7

= 8.979717 / 7 = 1.2828 Amp Ans

and the current across 14 ohm

I14 = V14 / 14

= 8.979717 / 14 = 0.6414 Amp Ans
