Question
Explanation / Answer
DNA fingerprinting also called DNA typing is a technique used to identify individuals based on the base-pair pattern in their DNA. It is a profile of small DNA variations which is unique for every individual. Since an individual gets half DNA from father and half from mother so 99.9% of DNA is similar to his/her parents. For paternity testing, DNA fingerprint of child and parents is compared and, they should be composite to each other. After ignoring the matching fragments, compare the remaining fragments. If they do not match properly then they are not child’s parents.
In the present problem, DNA fingerprint pattern i.e. DNA fragments of Woman #3 matches exactly with the child’s DNA fragment pattern. So Woman #3 is likely to be the biological mother of the child.
