Question
“Obesity is a global health concern. Rising rates of obesity throughout the world suggest that it is poised to overtake smoking as the primary preventable cause of death in developed countries. It is believed that many persons who are obese are reluctant to engage in preventable health care practices because they feel that health care providers have negative attitudes toward them." (J, Hinkle, 2014) “Obesity is not merely a condition: rather it is a metabolic disease that is characterized by fat that accumulates to the extent that health is impaired.” (ASMBS,2012) Obesity usually results from a combination of contributing factors, including, Genetics, unhealthy diet, diseases and or social and economic issues. Obesity equals a BMI of 30 or greater. Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. We have regrettably became a society of fast foods and continuing to push to accept of people of all sizes and shapes, no longer do we think healthy first we are allowing people to be comfortable with their obesity without helping them to become healthier. More and more we make obesity reasonable by the media, protests and reality shows. We need to teach a healthy lifestyle without attacking or condemning those who have lost control due to illness, depression or just lack of education.
The nurse would intervene the nutrition and weight status objectives by continuing education, promoting proper nutrition, and following BMI measurements to show progress in weight loss. Teaching the patient and providing references for dietitians and physical exercise coaches to assist the patient in staying on track. We need to encourage and not condemn, Knowing that a program is working is an encouragement to continue with it. Other options would include pharmacotherapy or bariatric surgery.“Increase the proportion of physician office visits made by adult patients who are obese that include counseling or education related to weight reduction, nutrition, or physical activity” (healthypeople.gov 2020).
The obese patient is at risk for multiple diseases and disorders, which include heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis just to name a few. These patients frequently suffer from low self -esteem, depression and a diminished quality of life. Many of these patients are believed to be lazy, overindulgent or lacking self-control. It makes it difficult for health care providers to promote healthy living practices without offending the patient. As with any other disease patients need to be treated with respect and dignity. A patient must develop a trust with their providers who enable them to follow direction and work toward goals set together. This disease is not a quick fix, it is a long term difficult journey and must include continued education, prompting and emotional support, not unlike alcoholism. Do u agree with the above? If yes or no, state why
