Question

Is it generally a good idea to gain understanding of the 'size' of units. Consider the following objects and calculate the magnitude of their momentum in SI units.
A) A ladybug weighing 36.20 milligram flies by your head at 2.69 mph. [Find this answer in kg•m/s]
B) A 66.40-lb boy walks at 2.55 mph [Find this answer in kg•m/s]
C) A car weighing 2164 lbs is moving at a speed of 31.30 mph. [Find this answer in kg•m/s]

Explanation / Answer

Given

here given units are mass in lbs and velocity in mph

converting these units in to SI system we can get as

we know that 1 lb = 0.453592 kg and

1 mile = 1.609344 km

and 1 km = 1000 m

now 1 mph = 1.609344*1000 /(60*60) m/s

1 mph = 0.44704 m/s

the momentum P is product of mass and velocity P = m*V

A) lady bug of weighing 36.20 milligrams = 36.20*10^-6 kg, velocity v = 2.69 mph =0.44704*2.69 m/s =1.202538 m/s

so the momentum of the ladybug is P = 36.20*10^-6*1.202538 kg m/s

P = 4.35318756*10^-5 kg m/s

B) boy m = 66.40 lb = 0.453592*66.40 kg = 30.11853 kg

velocity v = 2.55 mph = 2.55*0.44704 m/s = 1.13995 m/s

momentum is P = 30.11853*1.1395 kg m/s = 34.320064935 kg m/s

C) car

m = 2164 lb = 0.453592*2164 kg = 981.5739 kg

v = 31.30 mph = 31.30*0.44704 m/s = 13.99235 m/s

momentum of car is P = m*v = 981.5739*13.99235 kg m/s = 13734.525559665 kg m/s
