Question

29 N and -29 N is wrong!!!!

Your friend is catching a falling basketball after it has passed through the basket. Her hands move straight down while catching the ball. It takes about 0.10 s for the player to lower her hands to stop the ball. Assume the mass of the ball is 0.60 kg, and that the ball has fallen a vertical distance of 1.2 m before reaching the players hand. Determine the average force that her hands exert on the ball while catching it. Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

after falling a height 1.2 m

speed of ball , u = sqrt(2*g*h)

Put value

u =sqrt(2*9.8 * 1.2)

u = 4.85 m/s

Now , using second law of motion ,

force = change in momentum / time

force = 0.60 * (4.85 - 0)/.10

Solve

net force = 29.1 N

Fhand = 29.1 + 0.6 *9.8

Solve and find final answer

Fhand = 35 N( Answer)

the average force acting on the balls is 35 N
