What will be the impulse on each particle? d) What will the kinetic energy of each particle before and after the collision?

Explanation / Answer

a)Since it is elastic head on collision of same mass objects,

velocities will be exchanged.

velocity of first = 1m/s. left

velocity of second = 1 m/s right

b)before collision Vcm = (1-1) = 0 m/s

after collision Vcm = (1-1) = 0 m/s

c) impulse on first particle = change in its momentum

= 0.1*(1+1) = 0.2 Ns leftward

impulse on second= 0.2 Ns rightward

d) Since it is elastic head on collision, KE will remain same after collision.

for first particle,

KE1i = 0.5*0.1*1^2= 0.05 J

KE1f = 0.05 J

for second particle,

KE2i = 0.05 J

KE2f = 0.05 J
