Question

Two objects having masses m_1 and m_2 are connected to each other as shown in the figure and are released from rest. There is no friction on the table surface or in the pulley. What must be true about the tension T in the string just after the objects are released? A) T m_1g C) T = m_1g D) T > m_2g A 6.00-kg block is in contact with a 4.00-kg block on a horizontal frictionless surface shown in the figure. The 6.00-kg block is being pushed by a horizontal 50.0-N force as show What is the magnitude of the force that the 6.00-kg block exerts on the 4.00-kg block? A) 20.0 N B) 4.00 N C) 10.0 N D) 8.00 N

Explanation / Answer

8) A)  T<m2g

9) we know that the two blocks are accelerating the same (as a group)
F= m a
a = F/m= 50/10 = 5 m/s/s
and
we know they are both accelerating as individual objects at the same rate
so
(m a)1 + (m a)2 = (m a)1&2
or more simply
(m a)2 = F2 = 4 kg (5 m/s/s) = 20 N
the remaining 30 N is busy accelerating the 6 kg block

so option A is correct.
