One of the natural phenomenon which requires a chemical reaction is "weathering of rocks".
(a) Weathering is the breaking down of rocks, soil and minerals as well as wood and artificial materials through contact with the Earth's atmosphere, waters and biological organisms. Chemical weathering changes the composition of rocks, often transforming them when water interacts with minerals to create various chemical reactions. It is a gradual and ongoing process as the mineralogy of rock adjusts to the near surface environment.
It is enhanced by such geological agents as the presence of water and oxygen, as well as by such biological agents as the acid produced by microbial and plant-root metabolism.
(b) Acid rain is caused by an emission of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which react with the water molecules in atmosphere to produce acids. These substances can rise very high into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants, known as acid rain. Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides dissolve very easily in water and can be carried very far by the wind.
