Question

PLEASE ANSWER PART C

a) A point source of light illuminates an aperture 2.1 m away. A 12.0 cm wide bright patch of light appears on a screen 1.0 m behind the aperture. How wide is the aperture? 8.13cm b) What action(s) would cause a larger patch of light appear on the screen? Moving the screen closer to the aperture Moving the light source closer to the aperture Making the aperture larger c) If you were 2.1 m away from the aperture, what length of the screen (1.0 m on the other side of the aperture) would you see? cm

Explanation / Answer

given
distance of aperture from point source, d = 2.1 m
distnace of screen from aperture, D = 1 m
diameter of the patch, 2r = 12 cm

a. let width of aperture be w
   then from simple trigonometry
   w/d = 2r/(D + d)
   w/2.1 = 12 cm/3.1
   w = 8.129 cm
b. to increase 2r
   2r = w(D + d)/d = w(1 + D/d)

   so to increase 2r, w can be increased, or D can be increased or d can be decreased

   so, moving the light source closer to the aperture
   Making the aperture larger

c. THE GIVEN QUESTION is equivalent to the width of the screen seen by the point light source
   so, 2r = 12 cm (given)
