Question
parts c and d please!
A positively charged particle Q_1 = +35 nC is held fixed at the origin. A second charge Q_2 of mass m 6.5 mu g is floating a distance d = 35 cm above charge Q_1. The net force on Q_2 is equal to zero. You may assume this system is close to the surface of the Earth. (a) Which of the following represents the free-body diagram of charge Q_2? (b) What is the sign of the charge on Q_2? (c) Write an equation for of charge Q_2 in terms of the given variables. |Q_2| = (d) Calculate the magnitude of Q_2 in units of nanocoulombs.Explanation / Answer
Electric force on the Q2:
F = k*Q1*Q2/d^2
where k = 9*10^9
Now, force of gravity ,
Fg = m*g
Now, for the charge to be in equilibrium,
Fg = F
So, mg = k*Q1*Q2/d^2
So, Q2 = mg*d^2/(k*Q1) <------ answer
magnitude of Q2 = 6.5*10^-9*9.8*0.35^2/(9*10^9*35*10^-9)
= 2.48*10^-11 C
= 248 nC <------- answer
