Question

Help with problem (C)

Note: only find the direction of the induced magnetic moment. Do not try to find the magnitude.

3) A selection of infinite, current-carrying wires is arranged according to the diagram on the next page. Wire 1, carrying a current of magnitude 2 A, is located at point pl = . Wire 2, carrying a current of magnitude 4 A, is located at point p2 . Wire 3, carrying a magnitude of 8A, is located at point p3-. Wire 4, carrying a current with a magnitude of 5 A, is located at point p4 = (a) Assuming wires 1 and 3 carry current that runs out of the page (in the positive-z direction) and wires 2 and 4 carry current that run into the page (in the negative-z direction), find the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at the following points: BA =-4 cmr-5 cm > B C= (b) Repeat part A, this time assuming the current from all wires is running into the page (in the negative- z direction) (c) Assume the current from all wires runs in the same direction, into the page (in the negative-z direction). A circular loop of copper of radius r = 0.5 cm is placed at point B such that its area vector is horizontal on the diagram. What is the magnitude and direction of the induced magnetic moment in this loop if the currents from wires 1 and 4 increase to 112 A over 5 ms? . x ·C 1

Explanation / Answer

(C) The flux change due to current carrying wire 1 is a little greater than that of wire 4, So the emf induced in the circular coil will oppose more to the flux due to 1 than wire 4.

Lets consider the area vector and magnetic moment is in the same direction.

Hence the magnetic moment of circular loop will mke an angle of a little greater than 45 degree with negative y-axis and will be directed towards negative xy direction.
