Question

A boy throws a ball vertically upward from the top of an H = 35 m building with a velocity of v_o = 21 m/s. 1 Find the maximum height H_max that the hall rises. 2. Find the time t it takes the ball starting at its initial position, to reach the level of its starting point again on the way down. 3. Find the position y (in m) of the ball 5.0 seconds after it is thrown. 4. Find the velocity v (in m/s) of the ball just before hitting the ground. 5. Find the total elapsed time t_out (in s) before the ball hit's the ground.

Explanation / Answer

Given that

height h=35 m

initial velocity vo=21 m/s

now we find the maximum height

the maximum height Hmax=21^2/2*9.8=22.5 m

now we find the time taken to reach maximum height

time t=21/9.8=2.143 sec

now we find the position after 5 second

position y=-21*5+1/2*9.8*5^2=17.5 m

now we find the velocity to hits the ground

velocity V=[21^2+2*9.8*35]^1/2=33.6 m/s

now we find the time

time t=2*[2*35/9.8]^1/2=5.35 sec
