Question

As shown below, a coil is in a magnetic field that is directed upward. If the magnitude of the magnetic field increases, in what direction does the induced current flow in the coil? Explain. Suppose you know that a deflection of the galvanometer needle to the right means that current is flowing into the galvanometer as indicated: A bar magnet is moved towards a coil as shown in the picture below. The galvanometer needle deflects to the left. Replace the question marks on the magnet with the appropriate North and South markings. Briefly explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

1) Current is induced by increasing the magnitude of the magnetic firld. So, by Lenz's ruke, the direction of the induced current will be such that it opposes the very cause creating it and hence it will try to reduce the magnitude of the magnetic field.

Using right hand rule, if the induced current induced in clockwise, then the magnetic field it generates points downwards and thus reduces the magnetic field which produced it.

Hence the induced current flows in the clockwise direction in the coil.
