Question
We will study the most important work of Nobel laureate Arthur Compton in Chapter 40. Disturbed by speeding cars outside the physics building at Washington University in St. Louis, Compton designed a speed bump and had it installed. Suppose that a 1800 kg car passes over a bump in a roadway that follows the arc of a circle of radius 18.8 m as in Figure P6.51.
(a) What force does the road exert on the car as the car passes the highest point of the bump if the car travels at 21.5 km/h?
N
down or up or left or right?
(b) What is the maximum speed the car can have as it passes this highest point without losing contact with the road?
km/h
Explanation / Answer
Given that
mass m=1800 kg
radius r=18.8 m
speed v=21.5 km/h=5.97 m/s
now we find the forces does the road exert on the car as the car passes the highest point
force N=mg-mv^2/r
=1800*9.8-1800*5.97^2/18.8
=17640-3412.43
=14227.57 N
the direction is upward
now we find the maximum speed
maximum speed V=[5.97^2-2*9.8*18.8]^1/2=18.2 m/s=18.2*18/5=65.52 km/h
