Question

What are fibronectins? In what forms and in what parts of the body are they found? Fibronectins consist of two large polypeptide subunits linked by a pair of disulfide bonds at their C-termini. Each subunit is folded into a series of rodlike domains. Define domain. What are the functions of some of the domains found in fibronectin? With some types of cells grown in culture, the culture dishes must first be coated with fibronectin. What purpose does this serve? What observations have been made that support a role for fibronectins in cell movement?

Explanation / Answer

fibronectin is a glycoprotein. varients of fibronectin are plasma fibronectin is synthesized by hepatocytes in liver and cellullar fibronectin is secreted by fibroblasts. it is organizes into fibrils which consitutes in extra cellular matrix. examples: eye, connective of body parts, skin. it plays important role in cell adhesion, wound healing, cell differentiation. they are some domains in fibronectin .domain are nothing but specific sites in fibronectin for attachments. in fibronectin-binding domian referred as assembly domain is required for initiation of fibronectin matrix assembly, other domians like fibrin-binding domian, collagen binding domain, heparin-binding domain. mainly plays in cell adhesion, interact with other proteins like heparin, collagen, fibrin.

it may act as growth stimulater by secreting certain growth factors cell differentiation, cell proliferation..

fibronectin is one major component in extracellular matix which mainly helps in cell - cell adhesion, cell to matrix adhesion, it provies achors and maintains cell contact during cell movement.
