Question

Please help with both questions if possible

1.) For an object in simple harmonic motion with no damping, which of the following is false?

A. The amplitude of the oscillations remains constant.

B. The mechanical energy of the system is conserved.

C. The kinetic energy of the system remains constant.

D. The frequency of the oscillations remains constant.

2.) An oscillating mass attached to a horizontal spring glides back and forth along a frictionless surface between displacements positions x = +A and x = -A. Where does the force due to the spring have the largest magnitude in the positive x-direction?

A. x = +A

B. x = 0

C. x = -A

D. x = A/2

Explanation / Answer

1) C is the false as the kinetic energy of the object converts to potential energy and it never remains constant.

2) C is true. As spring force is restoring force which means it always tries to pull object towards the equilibrium position, the force at x=-A will be in the positive x direction and will be maximum.
